"Western herbal medicine is not symptom-based, or even as reductionist as using plants with oleoresins to combat inflammation, or polysaccharides to modulate immunity, though these relationships between chemical compositions of herbs and their long term clinical indications do exist. A system of using western herbs based on physiological function, body systems, and actions of the herbs will present specific herbs and their uses within that context.
My personal approach to western herbalism, or phytotherapy, is a happy tossed salad mixing medicinal plant research, such as the recent paper explaining the antiviral activity of lectins in Sambucus (elder berries), with an enduring Euroamerican Eclectic healing philosophy that embraces vitalism."
